Trump Threatens To Cut Off Trade With Spain Over Military Base Refusal
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to halt trade relations with Spain after the Spanish government refused to allow American forces to use military bases on its territory for strikes against Iran.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday while hosting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump said the United States could completely sever commercial ties with Spain over the decision.
“We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” the president said.

The remarks came after Spanish officials made clear that U.S. forces had not used Spanish bases for operations targeting Iran and would not be allowed to do so.
On Monday, the Spanish government confirmed that no American attacks on Iran had been launched from Spanish territory. Authorities in Madrid stressed that Spain retains full control over its military installations and decisions regarding their use.
The dispute highlights rising tensions among Western allies as military operations linked to the conflict with Iran continue to expand. Spain’s refusal to permit the use of its bases has now created a diplomatic rift with Washington, with Trump signaling that economic retaliation could follow if the stance remains unchanged.
