Pope Leo Condemns ‘Atrocious Violence’ In Iran War And Calls For Immediate

Pope Leo issued a strong appeal for peace on Sunday, urging world leaders to halt the escalating conflict involving Iran and calling for an immediate ceasefire as the war enters its third week.

Speaking during his weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff described the ongoing violence as “atrocious” and warned that war cannot bring justice or lasting stability to the region.

“For two weeks, the peoples of the Middle East have been suffering the atrocious violence of war,” the pope told thousands gathered in the square.

“In the name of Christians in the Middle East and all people of good will, I appeal to those responsible for this conflict: cease fire.”

Growing Concern Over Civilian Suffering

The conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iranian forces has intensified across several parts of the region.

According to international reports, the fighting has caused widespread destruction and heavy civilian casualties, with thousands of non-combatants believed to have been killed or injured.

Pope Leo emphasized that the suffering of ordinary people should remain the world’s primary concern as the war continues to expand.

He warned that violence cannot deliver the peace and stability that communities in the Middle East have sought for decades.

Lebanon Also Facing Escalating Tensions

The pope also raised concern about the situation in Lebanon, where clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have further destabilized the region.

Lebanon has already been facing severe economic and political challenges, and the renewed violence threatens to deepen the country’s humanitarian crisis.

Pope Leo expressed hope that dialogue among political leaders could help support the country’s authorities in finding long-term solutions for peace and stability.

“War Cannot Solve Problems”

Later in the day, during a visit to a parish in Rome, the pope repeated his call for dialogue and reconciliation.

In his homily, he warned against the idea that armed conflict can resolve disagreements between nations.

“The claim that problems can be solved through war is absurd,” he said, urging leaders to pursue continuous dialogue and diplomatic solutions instead.

The pontiff also criticized those who attempt to justify violence in the name of religion.

“Some even invoke the name of God to justify killing,” he said. “But God cannot be used to defend darkness. He brings light, hope, and peace.”

Vatican’s Continued Push for Peace

The Vatican has repeatedly called for diplomatic solutions in global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East where multiple wars and tensions have unfolded over decades.

Pope Leo’s latest appeal reflects the Holy See’s long-standing position that negotiations and dialogue offer the only sustainable path toward lasting peace.

As the war continues to escalate, the pope’s message adds moral pressure on world leaders to seek a ceasefire and prevent further suffering across the region.
