U.S. Women’s Hockey Team Declines Trump’s State of the Union Invitation

The U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team has declined President Donald Trump’s invitation to attend his State of the Union address, citing scheduling conflicts following their gold medal victory at the Winter Games.

The invitation came after both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams secured dramatic overtime wins against Canada to capture gold medals at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Trump extended the offer publicly, joking during a congratulatory call with the men’s team that he would “probably be impeached” if he failed to invite the women’s team as well.

In a statement, a USA Hockey spokesperson said the athletes were “sincerely grateful” for the invitation and appreciated the recognition of their achievement. However, the team members are unable to attend due to previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games.

“They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment,” the spokesperson added.

The White House did not immediately comment on the decision.

Olympic Triumph

The women’s team defeated Canada in Thursday’s Olympic final in a closely contested matchup that went into overtime, adding another chapter to the long-standing rivalry between the two nations in women’s hockey. The men’s team followed with its own overtime victory Sunday, also against Canada, earning the United States back-to-back hockey gold medals in dramatic fashion.

Team USA’s celebrations on the ice marked one of the most memorable moments of the Games, with players embracing after clinching victory in front of a global audience.

Political Backdrop

Trump invited the men’s team to attend the State of the Union during a phone call Sunday night after their win. It remains unclear whether the men’s team will attend the address.

During the call, Trump emphasized that the women’s team would also be invited, quipping that failing to do so could result in impeachment — a remark delivered jokingly.

The decision by the women’s team not to attend appears to be based on logistical timing rather than political protest. Olympic athletes often return to academic, professional, or training commitments immediately after international competition.

The State of the Union address is traditionally attended by invited guests from various sectors, including military members, community leaders and athletes. Presidential invitations to championship sports teams are a longstanding custom, though attendance decisions have occasionally drawn public attention in recent years.

For now, the women’s team’s focus appears to remain on celebrating its Olympic victory and transitioning back to post-Games responsibilities.
